What does it really take to keep a nonprofit financially sustainable for 20 years?

In this episode of YEDI’s Startup Sandwich Podcast, host Ric Phillips speaks with Kathy Laszlo, Co-Founder and Executive Director of DANI (Developing and Nurturing Independence), about the realities of building and growing a nonprofit.

DANI started with seven families, a one-week camp, volunteers, and no funding. Today, it supports adults with developmental disabilities through multiple programs, locations, housing initiatives, and social enterprises.

Kathy shares what she learned along the way — from securing grants and building multiple revenue streams to launching social enterprises, knowing when an idea isn’t working, building financial reserves, and planning for the organization to continue beyond its founder.

She also shares how YEDI’s Not-for-Profit Program helped her move DANI from a grassroots initiative toward a more professional and sustainable organization.

If you’re running a nonprofit and wondering how to fund it, grow it, and build for the long term, this conversation is packed with lessons from someone who has spent 20 years doing exactly that.
